MASS ARREST: 34 Suspects Rounded Up by Police After Deadly Chieftaincy Violence in Upper West
FUNSI, UPPER WEST REGION — A massive security sweep in the Wa East District has led to the arrest of 34 suspects following a fresh outbreak of violent chieftaincy clashes in the Funsi traditional area.
The heavy police deployment was ordered by the Upper West Regional Security Council (REGSEC) after a long-standing factional dispute over royal succession exploded into open violence, tragically claiming three lives and leaving several local residents with severe injuries.
With tensions threatening to spill over into neighboring communities, state security forces moved in aggressively to disarm factions, restore order, and round up those responsible for orchestrating the bloodshed.

A Flashpoint Town Under Lockdown

The Funsi chieftaincy dispute, which has historically flared up due to conflicting claims over the succession route and a lack of documented customary laws, turned deadly earlier this week. Heavily armed factions clashed in the center of the township, leading to the destruction of property, burning of structures, and widespread panic that forced women and children to flee into nearby bushes.
To prevent total lawlessness, a combined team of armed police personnel and military detachments stormed the community in a dawn raid.
The operation resulted in the immediate arrest of 34 dynamic suspects found directly on the scene or linked to the targeted attacks. Security forces also established strict checkpoints at all major entry and exit points leading into Funsi.
Weapons Seized and Curfew Considerations
During the sweeping searches, police recovered an array of dangerous weapons used during the rioting. The seized items include:
Locally manufactured single-barrel guns
Machetes and specialized hunting knives
Substantial stockpiles of hidden ammunition

Due to the volatile nature of the area, REGSEC is actively evaluating whether to petition the Ministry of the Interior to slap a formal dusk-to-dawn curfew on the Funsi traditional area to completely neutralize the threat of retaliatory midnight attacks.
National Peace Council Steps In

The 34 suspects are currently in police custody at the Regional Police Headquarters in Wa, where they are being processed for court on charges ranging from rioting with weapons, causing unlawful damage, to murder.
Meanwhile, the Upper West Regional Peace Council and the Regional House of Chiefs have issued an urgent joint statement calling for absolute calm. Security experts are warning that while armed intervention stops the immediate shooting, true stability will only return if the Ministry of Chieftaincy steps in to officially synchronize and codify the customary laws governing the Funsi stool.
For now, an uneasy calm hangs over the town as heavy security patrols keep a watchful eye on the streets.

What do you think is the best way to permanently end these recurring chieftaincy disputes in Ghana? Should the courts take over completely, or should traditional councils be given more power? Let us know in the comments below!
