Adenta Building Rescue Concludes

# BREAKING: GNFS Concludes Adenta Building Collapse Rescue Operation; 4 Survivors Saved, 1 Fatality Confirmed

Accra, Ghana — The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has officially concluded its intense 24-hour search and rescue operation at Adenta New Site following the tragic collapse of a residential building during Wednesday evening’s heavy downpour.

The emergency operation, which drew praise for its swift multi-agency coordination, officially ended late Thursday night at 10:54 PM (22:54 hours). Emergency responders successfully pulled four survivors from the rubble, while one casualty was tragically recovered.

The Incident

The disaster occurred on Wednesday evening, June 3, 2026, when an intense rainstorm swept through the Greater Accra Region. At approximately 6:36 PM, the structural integrity of a one-storey residential building located near the Da Yesu Ase Supermarket failed, completely caving in and trapping five occupants under heavy concrete debris.

The GNFS National Headquarters immediately dispatched specialized rescue teams, heavily supported by personnel from the Legon and Abelemkpe fire stations, alongside the Ghana Police Service, medical teams, and local community volunteers.

The Rescue Effort and Casualties

Rescuers worked tirelessly through the night and the ensuing day to clear the wreckage. Their efforts yielded the successful rescue of four individuals who were pulled out alive:

Fred Atagba (mid-30s)

Solomon (Adult male)

Seyeram Dzigda (Child)

David Dzigda (Child)

All four survivors sustained various degrees of injury and were immediately rushed to the 37 Military Hospital in Accra, where they are currently receiving medical treatment. In a heartwarming moment amidst the tragedy, rescue teams also managed to safely pull a family dog from the rubble alive.

Tragedy struck during the final phases of the operation when the fifth trapped occupant, identified as Margaret Kpeli (believed to be in her late 30s), was retrieved from beneath the heavy debris in an unconscious state. She was handed over to the Adenta District Police and was later confirmed deceased.

Growing Calls for Enforcement

The disaster has reignited intense public debate across the capital regarding building code enforcement and structural safety during Ghana's rainy season. Local authorities, including the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), have hinted that a full investigation is underway, with potential legal and financial surcharges facing the building's owner for structural negligence.

The GNFS has formally extended its gratitude to the local Adenta residents who bravely rushed to assist before emergency teams arrived, highlighting the power of community solidarity in moments of crisis.
